Late Talkers Parent and Child Group Therapy

Our Late Talkers Parent and Child Group offers a practical, play-based approach to support children aged 2-4 years with speech delays. Led by experienced speech pathologists, the programme includes six weekly sessions focusing on using everyday routines, songs, and storytelling to promote communication. Parents learn strategies to foster language development naturally at home.

This program is designed for parents of children aged 2 to 4 years who are experiencing delays in speech or language. It is suitable for children who are not yet speaking or using very few words. The group provides valuable skills for parents to support their child's communication journey in a fun and interactive environment.

Our strategies are based on current evidence in early language development, focusing on following the child's interests and engaging through play. Studies indicate that early, playful interventions can lead to meaningful improvements in speech and language skills, as well as strengthen parent-child interactions.

Families will:

• access speech pathology support at a lower cost
• learn practical strategies they can use at home
• practise strategies with support from a speech pathologist
• build confidence in supporting their child’s communication
• meet other families with similar concerns
• receive guidance about whether further assessment may be helpful

A brief individual screening is required before enrolment to ensure the group is suitable for your child. This is not a formal assessment or diagnosis.If your child may need further assessment or more individualised support, we will discuss the recommended next steps with you.

• Six weekly 60-minute sessions
• Springfield Lakes YMCA
• 3–4 families per group
• $70 per family, per session. Private health rebates may apply. Medicare Care Plans cannot be used for group sessions. NDIS participants (plan & self-managed) are welcome.
• Parent or caregiver attendance is required
